New Year’s resolutions are always the most fresh in our minds in the first few months of the year, and as it turns out, January and February are the best months to take advantage of that newly refreshed productivity to prepare your home for the spring market.
First things first, by preparing in advance you can take the time needed to do the big projects on your home like repainting, carpet cleaning, or roof repairs. These big projects will absolutely slow down your home selling process if you wait until just before you put it on the market to spruce up. You’ll want these jobs done the right way as they will also increase the value of your home in the long run.
This is also a good time to work on the outdoor projects and landscaping. Though it is cold and grey out right now, you can use this time to put down new mulch and clean up the yard. Nothing looks better than perfectly trimmed blooming flowers at first sight of your home. Also, if you’re into gardening, February and March is actually a great time to get spring annual and perennial flowers germinating to bloom fully during that peak spring market.
Finally, and unfortunately, winter seems to always be the time when pipes and water heaters show their age in the cold weather. Take this time to check that all of your home essentials are functioning properly. Your home will undergo inspection when it gets a contract for sale, so take this time to get to know your home and make sure everything is functioning properly.
Ultimately, if there are problems with your home when it goes on the market or when it gets a contract to be sold, people will be looking for the flaws at open houses, inspections, and showings. Be prepared well in advance so you can rest easy when you’re making plans to move out later in the year.
