Happy Fall! The leaves are changing, the temps are dropping, and the smells of everything pumpkin spice are in the air. We are especially lucky in the mid-Atlantic to enjoy all of the beautiful Fall foliage and fun events that come with it. Here are a few events coming up in the DMV area to check out as we head into October.
Whether you live in DC, Maryland or Virginia there is no shortage of Oktoberfests and Beer Festivals to kick off the Fall season. Here are just a few coming up that are worth visiting. The 2017 Taste of DC Festival this year will be October 7-8, 2017, Saturday 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday 11 a.m. -6p.m. Located at the RFK Stadium grounds, the event will feature an Oktoberfest section with live music, games, bratwurst, and international, national and local beers to taste and enjoy.
On October 7th you can also visit the Reston Oktoberfest event in Reston towncenter occuring from noon – 11p.m. visit the local restaurants participating in the event and there will be carnival rides.
Finally the Kentlands Oktoberfest will be October 8th from noon to 5p.m. in Gaithersburg, MD. The Kentlands Oktoberfest is more family-friendly with live music, games, wagon rides, pumpkin painting. The Kentalnds Oktoberfest will also include a Wine Terrace and traditional beer garden. There are so many more Oktoberfests, you almost can’t miss having a traditional Deutsche beer drinking party somewhere in the DMV area within the next month.
Pumpkin Patches and Orchards
Take advantage of the fall harvest at the local pumpkin patches and orchards in the area! Here are of some of the best ones for the whole family. Butlers Orchard in Germantown opens up September 30th and is open to the public every weekend in October. Their orchard includes hayrides, corn maze, playground, giant slides, corn hole games, and of course pumpkin picking. They also serve yummy fall treats such as apple cider donuts, kettle corn, and caramel apples as well as barbecue.
A little cheaper than Butlers Orchard, Homestead Farm in Poolesville, MD is only $4.00 per person and $.59/lb for pumpkins. Homestead Farm has a hayride to the pumpkin patch and you can take your pick of the best pumpkins around. You can also go apple picking for $1.99/lb for apples.
One of the more fun Farms for the little ones is Gaver Farm in Mount Airy, MD. With over 45 attractions, you could visit this farm over multiple weekends. Open from September 8 to November 5 from 10am-6pm you can visit this farm any day of the week. You pick your own apples and pumpkins, enjoy food at their Barn Grill, jump on the “giant pillow” jumper, visit their petting zoo and feed the farm animals, get lost in their mini mazes, run around on their playground, cheer on the duck races, and take your picture at their photo attraction. The fun is unlimited at this farm.
Halloween Events in the Area
Whether you’re a huge thrill seeker for the big scares, or you want a fun and safe trick or treating night with the kids there’s something for you in the DMV area. Check out a few we enjoy. Markoff’s Haunted Forest at Calleva Farm is a local favorite that has gotten better over the years. Located near Poolesville, MD, it’s been rated the #1 Halloween attraction by Channel 7 ABC. Not really meant for children or someone who hates being scared, walk through a dimly lit forest at night through scary scenes as costumed zombies, ghosts, and ghouls jump out and scare you. They also include a grill, games, and bonfires while you wait for your turn in the forest. The Haunted Forest is open through the weekends in October
On October 21st the National Air and Space museum in Chantilly, VA hosts their “Air and Scare” event at their Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. Featuring space aliens and mysterious astronauts, enjoy safe indoor trick-or-treating as well as games, face-painting, and story time.
Kings Dominion will be hosting their Halloween Haunt event from September 23-October 29, 2017 in Doswell, VA. The amusement park includes mazes, thrilling rides, and scary attractions during the Haunt at night. For families and children, go to the event during the day for Planet Snoopy with pumpkin painting, mazes, a pedal tractor ride, and more activities.
